Point of View – One's Worldview

A Point of View is an interesting thing.  It is much easier to see that someone has one than to see that I have one.  Usually someone else’s Point of View looks more like an opinion, whereas as my own Point of View shows up more like The Truth.  I have a suspicion that this could also be true for most of my fellow humans.

"We cling to our own point of view, as though everything depended on it.  Yet our opinions have no permanence; like autumn and winter, they gradually pass away."  Ahuangzi

Inquiring into Worldview and Point of View

"Man is pre-eminently endowed with the power of voluntarily and consciously determining his own Point of View."  – Ernst Mach

"Like everybody, I've had a lot of pain in my life and I'm a work in progress.  You must have a true desire to see the world from a different point of view, and that comes with growing up."  – Walter Goggins

Fact 1:  What could be more obvious in life than the simple fact that “seeing is believing”.  I saw it clear as day, it was so obvious, that’s exactly what happened, I was there, I know it for a fact.  If I can perceive it with my senses, then it is so.  It’s real.

Fact 2: I understand pretty much how the world works, I know something about people and why they do what they do, I know what God/spirituality is, what I see going on is what is happening.  I may not know everything, but I certainly can see what’s happening, even if I don’t always know why the heck it’s going on, I can see it.

So from these two well established (as in “everybody” knows these are true) we, each and everyone of us, relates with the world.  We see it, we know what’s true and what’s not, we have some understanding of how it works and what my place is in the world.

If we didn’t have some sense of the world we are living in wouldn’t we go crazy?  We have to have some understanding of what it is and what our place is in it.  Doesn’t everyone need that?

Yes, each and everyone of us needs that.  But there are over 7 billion people living on the Earth right now, and each and every one of us has some understanding of how it all works and where we all fit.

The thing is though, that there is an underlying, unspoken belief that each of us believes that our interpretation is THE correct one.  All 7+ billion of us.  7+ billion distinct points of view.  7+ billion world views, and of the 7+ billion, very few understand that their own world view is distinctly their own and not THE world view.

"When you really listen to another person from their point of view, and reflect back to them that understanding, it's like giving them emotional oxygen."   - Stephen Covey

When I came to realize that I was actually an animal, an organism, along with gazillions of others on this planet, I gained a whole new respect for who I am and for others as well.  Click here or select A Single Cell 1 at the top left to look into this investigation.
